As your job application folder makes the first impression on a potential internship provider, you should take care to prepare it very carefully in order to ensure that the first impression is a positive one!

You must ensure that you submit all relevant documents together with your application. These include a cover letter, a C.V./resumé with photo and all relevant certificates (university entrance qualification, apprenticeship/tvocational training, regular employment, degree, internship).
If you are applying for an internship within Germany, you need to apply at least 3 months in advance, and 6-9 months for an internship outside Germany.
At the top of your letter, please give your name and address, date, and also the address of the recipient. The letter should begin with a personal salutation and a text that is specific to the firm you are applying to. The text should answer the following questions:
- Why are you applying to this firm?
- What qualifications and experience do you have?
- What type of career are you aiming for?
- When do you wish to commence the internship?
- Where would you like to do the internship (e.g. location/department)?
End the letter by saying you would like to attend an interview, and don't forget to sign the letter!!!
Your C.V./resumé must contain personal information, schools attended, any vocational training, any military service or civilian service in lieu of military service, your university studies, any internships or employment, your non-academic interests and hobbies.
End your C.V./resumé with the town of writing, the date of writing and your signature!
If you are applying by email, you still need to keep the tone formal if your application is going to be successful! Don't attempt to use the "relaxed" tone that most people use for emailing! Scan all the necessary documents and attach all of them. Don't forget to provide a telephone no. as well as your email address! Send all of your documents in the standard MS-Office formats.
If you are asked to attend an interview, make sure you gather together enough information about the company beforehand, so that you are well prepared. Run through a potential interview in your mind, asking yourself questions that are likely to be asked in the real interview, and thinking about how you will respond to them (e.g. questions about aspects of your C.V./resumé).
During the real interview, make sure that your present yourself and your personal development in a straightforward, convincing way. Don't be afraid to admit to any wrong decisions you may have made. Be honest towards yourself and towards your interviewer!
And don't be afraid to ask questions about the firm or what your work there would exactly entail, or anything of that kind. This demonstrates your interest! But make sure you don't ask for any information which you could quite easily have procured for yourself before the interview!
