It is recommended that students split the internship during the program of study into a business administration and a technical part. If this option is chose, at least 4 weeks must be spent in each of the two sectors. It suffices if an internship is undertaken in the technical sector (12 weeks) or in the business administration sector (12 weeks).

If you wish to have a business administration internship recognized, you must have spent at least two weeks in at least one department of a firm. Please also note that the firm where the internship is to take place must have been authorized to train people by the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK) or the German Chamber of Tax Consultants (Steuerberaterkammer).

Internships in university institutes and affiliated institutes, part-time jobs. student assistant jobs, jobs in a student's own firm, or jobs in a firm belonging to a family relative of a student will not be recognized.

Students will find a selection of available internships here. However, we recommend that students consult other sources in addition.

Important notice: Please note that you must make up for all absences which may have accumulated during the period of time required for an internship to qualify for recognition. This does not apply for public holidays.

Students will find a selection of available internships here. However, we recommend that students consult other sources in addition.

Following recognition of the business administration part of your internship, your report will - with the corresponding endorsement of recognition - be forwarded internally to the Internship Office of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (Ms. Begnis), where the recognition of the internship as a whole will be certified.

Style and Content of the Internship Report

The internship report should, of course, focus primarily on describing the activities of the intern during the internship. However, a brief description of the firm in which the internship is being conducted should also be included in the report. We expect our students to produce at least 2.5 pages of running text as well as a table containing briefly listed daily bulletins. If the business administration internship involved working in several departments, we expect the report to be clearly broken down into the different areas of the firm. Please note that graphics are not a substitute for text and that appendices, the title page, or the table of contents do not count towards the number of pages.

Moreover, the following structural elements should be generally adhered to:

  • Title page
  • Table of contents
  • Possibly a confidentiality clause
  • Text
  • Table containing daily bulletins
  • Appendices
  • Acknowledgement of the firm (official stamp, date, signature).

IMPORTANT: Please note that daily bulletins in the table must contain detailed information. It should be clearly evident what your tasks were on each individual day. We will not accept reports that contain simple "copy-paste" tables.

Please submit your documents in a single PDF and send it via e-mail to praktikum@wiwi.rwth-aachen.de.

Recognition of a Vocational Traineeship

On an individual case basis, the Internship Office may recognize a vocational traineeship as a substitute for an internship. Please contact us directly if you have any questions pertaining to the recognition of your vocational traineeship. Otherwise, the recognition procedure is basically the same as having a business administration internship recognized. Please be aware that you will need to submit a new report that corresponds to the requirements placed on an internship report. You will also need to submit the application for recognition of the traineeship as well as the traineeship certificate.
