Peter Letmathe studierte Betriebswirtschaftslehre an der Universität Bielefeld und hat dort sein Studium als Diplom-Kaufmann abschlossen. Er promovierte an der Universität GH Essen (Umweltkostenrechnung) und habilitierte sich an der Ruhr-Universität Bochum zum Thema "Flexible Standardisierung". Nach der Promotion an der Universität GH Essen und der Habilitation an der Ruhr-Universität Bochum hatte er seine erste Professur für Umwelt- und Technologiemanagement an der Universität Bayreuth inne. Von 2002 bis 2011 hat er an der Universität Siegen den Lehrstuhl für Wertschöpfungsmanagement insbesondere in kleinen und mittleren Unternehmen geleitet und dort auch das Siegener Mittelstandsinstitut im Jahr 2003 gegründet und bis 2011 geleitet. Seit Oktober 2011 forscht und lehrt er in den Feldern des verhaltenswissenschaftlichen Controllings, des betrieblichen Wertschöpfungsmanagements sowie des Innovations- und Geschäftsmodellcontrollings an der RWTH Aachen und hat dort den Lehrstuhl für Controlling inne. Zugleich war er von 2018 bis 2021 Dekan der Fakultät.

Seit 1999 war er jeweils mehrfach Gastprofessor an der University of Colorado at Boulder und der Clemson University. Seine praktische Erfahrungen umfassen mehr als zwei Jahre Arbeit in der Möbelindustrie sowie mehr als 80 oft interdisziplinäre Forschungsprojekte mit der Industrie und anderen Forschungseinrichtungen vor allem in den Bereichen Operations Management, Strategisches Management, Controlling, Umweltökonomie und Prozessoptimierung. Seine interdisziplinäre Forschung umfasst den Mobilitätssektor, die Energietransformation, die Digitalisierung der Industrie und Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien. Er is Mitglied mehrerer wissenschaftlicher Gremien, z.B. des FOKOS-Instituts, der Gesellschaft für Operations Research (GOR e.V.) und des BAUM e.V. Peter Letmathe hat seine Forschung in mehreren Top-Journalen wie dem Journal of Operations Management, dem European Journal of Operational Research (EJOR), OR Spectrum, dem International Journal of Production Economics, Business Strategy and the Environment, dem International Journal of Operations and Production Management und der Zeitschrift für Betriebswirtschaft veröffentlicht. Im Juli 2013 erhielt er den EURO-Preis für das beste EJOR-Papier 2013 (Innovative Applications of OR).
