What does taking a doctoral degree entail?

Discussion between women professors of the School and women Master's students of the School who are contemplating taking a doctoral degree.

For the first time, the School of Business and Economics presented an information event of this kind on July 4, 2018 in the University's Königshügel Villa. The event targeted women Master's students who are interested in taking a doctoral degree, and it gave them the opportunity to discuss career perspectives following a Master's degree. In order to give the students insight into academic/scientific careers and into the process of gaining a doctoral degree, a roundtable discussion took place between internal and external doctoral candidates, "Habilitation" candidates and women professors from the School of Business and Economics, which involved personal experiences and individual career paths.

In addition to the organizers of the event, Prof. Almut Balleer, Prof. Stefanie Paluch and Ms. Alexandra Seidel (from the School's Mentoring Team), Prof. Christine Harbring, Dr. Meral Avci, Ms. Vanessa Schmidt, Ms. Ekaterina Korneeva and Ms. Valerie Starke gave insight into motivational reasons for taking the next academic step in the form of a doctoral degree. The advantages of and potential hurdles to gaining a doctoral degree were vividly presented and specific personality traits which are advantageous to gaining a doctoral degree were discussed.

The subsequent informal "get-together" enabled a lively exchange of opinions and ideas and questions between interested Master students and the presenters of the event on the topic of "taking a doctoral degree".

The School of Business and Economics would like to thank all of the participants and presenters for making this event such a success and would also like to thank the Association of Friends and Supporters of the School (Förderverein der Fakultät für Wirtschaftswissenschaften) for its support.
