Research Findings on the Decision to Become a Teacher Addressed by Der Spiegel News Magazine
A research team around Adam Ayaita from the Chair of HRM and Personnel Economics looked into the question of what motivates people to choose teaching as a profession. To answer this question, they drew on data from the National Educational Panel of the Leibniz Institute for Educational Progress in Bamberg and analyzed the survey of 3,600 ninth-graders, 487 of whom decided to study teaching.
The results of the study made it clear that the influence of parents in particular led to the decision to become a teacher, as did the wish for a secure job. Rather secondary, however, were the development and promotion opportunities within the teaching profession.
